The term Building Information Modeling has been used within the AEC industry for many decades. While some focus their definition upon the utilization of 3D computer generated models, others believe the core concept is that of the data being represented and contained within said models.
Recognizing that both statements are true, how does one reconcile firms that don’t use 3D models? How about the smaller companies that are only dabbling in the generation of diagrammatic drawings? What of the massive conglomerates that have incorporated scanning, drone technology, VR and AVR? Is a company doing BIM when all of its production and development is being provided from external teams and resources?
All these questions are valid, and their presence does nothing towards the removing of an organization from the participating within the BIM ecosystem, even if it is only in their own unique way.
Which brings us back to, what is BIM?
The answer: All of it.
BIM is a process, a path, a journey that must be taken. Even those companies that only seek to maintain present day protocol….they too are contributing to the overall BIM ecosystem.
Perhaps from that fact, one may expose the true characteristics of what BIM is.
If all companies, regardless of project type, size, financial investment, etc. are all still active participants, maybe the key isn’t standardized specifications or universally created families and schedules. Perhaps it is not what is at mile marker A, what is at mile marker B.
No. BIM is not A or B. BIM is the path from A to B……and beyond.
BIM could be considered: Building, Information, and Modeling.
Though easy to imply, how does a company effectively and efficiently navigate and set forth on this journey?
Simple. You already are; welcome to SR Analytics.
